22nd National Institutes of Health Anniversary

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) was established as the National Health Research Center in our country through the enactment of the Republic Act 8503 (Health Research and Development Act of 1998) on February 13, 1998. This 2020, the NIH will be celebrating its 22nd Anniversary by holding a 2-day conference and workshop with the theme: “Health Amidst Climate Change, Disasters, and Outbreaks” on March 2-3 2020 at the Bayanihan Center, UNILAB, Kapitolyo, Pasig City.  During the conference, discussions will focus on health impacts such as increased heat-related morbidity and mortality; higher risks of exposures to vector-borne diseases and pathogens; reduced food availability and quality for daily nutritional needs; increased risks of physical and mental health issues associated with demoralized and displaced populations resulting from climate-induced dislocation, environmental decline and conflict situations; greater frequency of infectious disease epidemics and physical injuries following storm-induced floods, landslides and droughts; and other climate change related consequences to health. A discourse on urban planning and health infrastructures to respond to the current climate scenarios will also be presented.

The anniversary conference aims to enlighten participants and the general public about the intersections of climate change and health, specifically to:

  1. Present healthcare challenges and opportunities amidst future climate change scenarios, disasters, and disease outbreaks;
  2. Advocate research themes for understanding intersections of climate change, disasters, and outbreaks, and;
  3. Provide an avenue for discussions and network-building among various and diverse stakeholders toward future healthcare systems.

The first day (March 2, 2020) will be a whole day conference with the above topics. The second day (March 3, 2020) will be composed of two half day workshops with limited slots. This will be a first come first serve basis. The morning workshop will be a training on Disaster Preparedness to be conducted by the Institute of Health Policies and Developmental Studies. This is open to medical practitioners and allied professionals, health administrators, policy makers, government employees, students, among others. The afternoon workshop will be on manuscript writing. This is for researchers with a draft of their manuscript (topic may not be related to the conference’s theme). The objective is to finish a publication-ready manuscript by the end of the workshop. This afternoon workshop is open to all researchers, who may be students, faculty, university researchers, research associates and others.

We are looking forward to your participation in this truly timely and worthy endeavor.
