Research Faculty

A research faculty position was established by the UP Board of Regents during the 1098th meeting on 21 June 1998. The research faculty is expected to do research, with a six-unit teaching load. The salary grade is similar to that of an Assistant Professor. A research faculty may be appointed through the following:

  • As entry level position (from non-salaried items)
  • As a substitute item from research affiliate (who wish to devote or dedicate time for research). Item will be available to college to hire contractual
  • As a career change (to dedicate full time to research); only possible if there is an equivalent research faculty item with the same faculty rank.

Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD degree holder or MD with residency/fellowship training
  • Track record in research and publication
  • Submission of a research agenda aligned with an institute or study group
  • Submission of at least one research proposal for implementation

Conditions for Employment

  • Acceptance as an affiliate faculty in an academic unit, with the NIH as the research base
  • With at least one ongoing research project a year
  • Temporary appointment, renewable annually, for a total of three years
  • Parameters for re-appointment:

a.Satisfactory teaching performance
b.Research publication, preferably in ISI-refereed journal
c.Continuing external support for research project

Procedures

1. Letter of application to the Chancellor (through the Executive Director of the NIH)
2. Endorsement by the Dean of the Academic Unit
3. Endorsement by the Institute Director or Study Groups Leader
4. Evaluation of the Research Personnel Committee, chaired by the Vice Chancellor for Research

At the end of each semester, the research faculty submits the Faculty Service Record to the OVCR/NIH.
