The National Institutes of Health (NIH), University of the Philippines Manila, held an Orientation on Technology Transfer on 28 August 2026, in collaboration with the UP Manila Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (UPM TTBDO). The orientation aimed to strengthen NIH researchers’ and staff’s understanding of technology transfer, intellectual property, and the processes involved in engaging with industry and technology sector partners.

The program featured discussions on UPM’s general processes and experiences in industry engagement, the UP Intellectual Property Policy, and a roundtable discussion on industry partnerships. TTBDO officers shared practical insights on intellectual property, commercialization, and working with industry partners. 

In his opening address, Dr. John Mark Velasco, Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives and Emerging Programs, emphasized the role of NIH in advancing research with purpose: 

“At UP NIH, our role is not only to generate new knowledge but to advance science with purpose.”

The discussions underscored the importance of protecting research outputs and creating pathways for innovations to reach the communities they are intended to serve. Participants were also encouraged to coordinate with TTBDO early when exploring potential collaborations involving intellectual property and technology transfer.

The session concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Emmanuel Estrella, Deputy Director for Administration and Finance, NIH, highlighting the importance of responsible collaboration in translating research and innovation into meaningful health outcomes for Filipinos.
