PERI Hosts NIH Flag Raising Ceremony and Eye Wellness Activity

Amidst the heavy rain, the Philippine Eye Research Institute (PERI), headed by Institute Director Dr. Harvey S. Uy, hosted the Flag Raising Ceremony at the NIH grounds on 17 August 2026. In his remarks, Dr. Uy highlighted PERI’s long-standing contributions to eye health research and its continuing work in areas such as cornea, glaucoma, retina, uveitis, ocular microbiology, and pathology, including its efforts to strengthen primary eye care and improve clinical outcomes.

Guest speaker Dr. Miguel Angelo S. Mantaring, Director IV of the Department of Education’s Bureau of Learner Support Services, emphasized the importance of translating research into practical, community-responsive solutions. He also highlighted the value of sustained collaboration among UP-NIH, DOH, and DepEd, citing the National Vision Screening Program (NVSP) as an example of how research, policy, and partnerships can contribute to programs that reach communities.

Following the ceremony, PERI conducted an Eye Wellness Activity for NIH employees in celebration of Sight Saving Month, offering automated refraction, AI-assisted eye screening, and free eye lubricant samples to promote eye health, early detection, and proper eye care. Through these activities, PERI reinforced its commitment to advancing accessible eye care through research and partnerships, contributing to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
