Cassini Corneal Shape Analyser (CSA): Frontiers in Corneal Shape Analysis and its use in Refractive Surgery

Introduction:

The cornea is responsible for more than two thirds (2/3) of the refractive power of the eye. Therefore many refractive solutions such as cataract refractive surgery and lasik refractive surgery involve measurement of the corneal shape. In lasik refractive applications, removal of minute portions of the cornea of the order of 1/100 of a millimeter creates dramatic improvement in vision. It is therefore important to have corneal shape measurements that are accurate and precise. The Cassini CSA is an invention of a Filipino scientist who did his PhD studies in Medical Physics at the VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The invention was patented in 2007 and became available in the market in 2014.

Objectives:

  1. To discuss history of corneal shape analysis including a Filipino invention that is currently becoming the gold standard in corneal shape diagnostic: the Cassini CSA
  2. To discuss the impact of Cassini CSA on toric intraocular lens implants in cataract refractive surgery: no refractive surprises!
  3. To discuss other benefits of Cassini CSA in clinical applications.
